Blackpink made their very long awaited comeback with Jump last week. The song which was originally released during the Blackpink Concert in Seoul as part of their Deadline World Tour, reached #2 on Spotify’s Global Chart on debut. So now that the dust has settled, how good is the Blackpink comeback? Does Jump really have the people entertained?
Blackpink Comeback : Jump MV Analysis
I think the most important thing to address here is that Blackpink has officially joined the green screen community, though I’m not sure how they would’ve simulated them flying away from a music zombie (?) apocalypse. And just based on this one sentence, you can tell it’s not a music video that’s meant to be taken too seriously. At its core, it has a brain rot vibe (pun intended) where the girls are having fun, because they can. They seem to be more in control of how things are going this time around, collaborating with some of their solo collaborators, including Dave Meyers, who directed Lisa’s New Woman music video.
Much like many of BP’s song, it talks about how they’re always at the front of everyone’s mind whether they’re fans or haters. While I did not expect to see the girls literally standing inside the mouths of people, it did convey their message without leaving much to the imagination. A constant theory about the girls is that they are co-workers and nothing else. This has been reinforced by Lisa, Jennie, Jisoo and Rose having a year of solo releases and I guess no amount of attending each other’s Coachella performances is going to change anyone’s mind.
As someone who has been a fan of Fifth Harmony, I can say that this is not a group that dislikes each other. There’s no disputing that Blackpink is very talented, individually and together but for me it’s never been just about the songs or the style. To me, Blackpink is the chemistry between the girls – they really do seem happy when they’re together, like four friends who just happen to work together. It wasn’t their music videos but a random compilation of their funny moments that I watched on a random day during lockdown that made me a fan.
I can understand why people are doubtful when everything in the entertainment industry feels like a PR move planned by a team of 16 but I’m not sure you can fake chemistry for this long (or at least I hope not). In their own words, they’re sisters and would stand together in the face of those obsessed with tearing them apart, zombie or otherwise.
Over these years, I’ve realised that it doesn’t really matter whether you like a Blackpink song or not, it will get stuck in your head. This is perfectly depicted by the scene in the Jump music video when the girls are literally inside someone’s ear. I have to admit that was a visual I could’ve gone my whole life without seeing but I get why they did it.
I might be putting myself in danger by admitting this but when Pink Venom came out, I did not like it. I’d somehow managed to get tickets to their show in London and my friend and I were sure that it was the one song we would have to survive through. But when the song actually came on, something shifted.
We held onto each other and sang like we were somehow witnessing our favourite song of all time. This of course led to some very embarrassing videos of us singing, but we had been converted – the random lyrics and the beat had finally won. And that’s the power of an earworm or maybe that’s the power of a Blackpink song – it’s only a matter of time before you’re singing it in the shower.
For what it’s worth, I do like Jump and it did not take me seeing them live for me to reach that conclusion. I think it’s catchy and has the kind of beat you can dance to whether you’re at the club or sat in your chair during a long work day.
Blackpink Comeback 2025: A Chaotic Return
Talking about this Blackpink comeback would be incomplete without talking about the rollout, which was very very chaotic to say the least. Personally, I think 3 years was way too long for a comeback. I understand that scarcity is the whole marketing strategy and I do think that the girls getting their time to do solo activities was very important – that being said, 33 songs for a group that’s been together for almost a decade is just not okay.
I imagine them releasing the song during the concert was based around the limited time they had together and it did manage to have the desired effect of creating hype around it. But the fact that the song is #1 on the Top 50 Global songs on Spotify, is not because of this rollout in the slightest, it’s because of the fanbase the girls have built over the years. To starve that the base of group content and for the girls to not pursue the ambitions they have as a group, feels like a disservice to everyone involved.
I love that they have their solo moments because at the end of the day they’re individuals who deserve their artistic freedom. I also think that’s the only way they’ll ever be able to stay together as a group. Maybe if groups like Fifth Harmony (yes I’ll never get over it) had that chance, maybe they would be active right now.
Blackpink as a group deserves more songs and so do the fans. I really hope there is a proper album that has a rollout with proper promotional events and music videos. And for the love of God, can it please be longer than 8 songs? I’’ll be happy even though it’s called “The Longer Album”.
What’s Next for Blackpink After Jump?
I don’t think the girls will break up, I think Blackpink will be around for at least a few years (manifesting) but I think there will be very few chances for a full album. We might get a single here or there and knowing their rate of comebacks, that’ll be like 2 songs in the next few years, with 4 group photos.
The time for the Rockstar, Mantra, APT and Earthquake girls to collaborate is now and this time for a proper album. Maybe the song count can even hit 45?
Blackpink needs to be in our area and for longer than a quick visit this time.
